The process involves creating a wax model of the desired part, encasing it in a ceramic shell, melting away the wax, and then pouring molten aluminum into the mold. Once the aluminum has cooled and solidified, the ceramic shell is broken away to reveal a highly detailed and precise aluminum part.

The Aluminum Investment Casting Process

  1. Pattern Creation: The process begins with the creation of a wax pattern, which is an exact replica of the part to be cast. Multiple wax patterns can be assembled into a tree-like structure to allow for the casting of multiple parts in one batch.
  2. Assembly: The wax patterns are attached to a central wax runner system, forming a tree. This assembly will eventually allow molten aluminum to flow into each pattern.
  3. Shell Building: The wax assembly is repeatedly dipped into a ceramic slurry, coated with sand, and left to dry. This process is repeated several times to build a thick, strong ceramic shell around the wax assembly.
  4. Wax Removal: The ceramic-coated assembly is placed in a kiln, where the wax is melted out, leaving a hollow ceramic shell. This step is crucial as it creates the mold cavity for the aluminum.
  5. Casting: The ceramic mold is preheated to remove residual moisture and prepare it for the molten aluminum. Molten aluminum is then poured into the mold, filling the cavity left by the wax pattern.
  6. Cooling: The mold is left to cool, allowing the aluminum to solidify and take the shape of the wax pattern.
  7. Shell Removal: Once the aluminum has cooled and solidified, the ceramic shell is broken away, revealing the cast aluminum part. The parts are then cut from the runner system.
  8. Finishing: The final step involves various finishing processes, like sandblasting, machining, and heat treatment, to achieve the desired surface finish and mechanical properties.
